Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry) - Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry) (Honours)
BHlthSc(Podiatry) - BHlthSc(Podiatry)(Hons)
This course has a strong emphasis on the clinical practices associated with podiatry and this will be complemented with studies in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, health promotion and the social sciences. Students will be required to undertake clinical placements in a range of settings during the course.
The Honours stream is embedded within the
four year program and comprises specific Honours research subjects that replace
pass degree subjects.
Enrolment through
Albury-Wodonga Campus
Study mode
On campus
Normal course duration
Full-time 4 years (8 sessions)
Admission criteria
Assumed knowledge for NSW HSC students is physics and biology.
Non-recent school leavers are required to submit a written application indicating their interest in, and motivation for studying podiatry; any relevant work experience; and any evidence of success at tertiary or other studies. These applicants also have the option of sitting the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). The Faculty of Health Studies provides science support for its students, especially for non-recent school leavers through the University’s STUDY LINK programs.
Graduation requirements
To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 256 points (29 subjects).
Transfer into the Honours stream
In order to be eligible to transfer into the Honours stream at the beginning of year three, students will have to obtain grades of credit or above in at least 50% of first and second level subjects in the pass degree.
Clinical experience
Students will be required to complete extensive clinical experience during their course. This will be undertaken in conjunction with a number of podiatry subjects throughout the course, beginning in the first year. This clinical experience will include external clinical placements, outreach clinics and practical work within the allied health clinic on Albury-Wodonga campus. Students are also expected to attend clinics during the holiday periods throughout the year, particularly during the long inter-semester and Christmas holiday breaks.
Criminal record checks
Students should be aware that the NSW, ACT and Victorian Health Departments have initiated a policy that all staff, including students undertaking clinical placements, in positions dealing with children and patients vulnerable by reason of health status, must undergo a criminal record check prior to employment or placement in any capacity in the NSW, ACT and Victorian health systems.
Professional recognition
The Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry) was first introduced in 2001. The course has been developed to meet the requirements of the Australasian Podiatry Council and Registration Boards in NSW and Victoria.

Complementary electives
These two subjects must be selected from fields that are apposite to the course (e.g. in biomedical sciences, gerontology, leisure and health, or health services management). Students are not required to select both subjects from a single field. Since podiatrists mainly treat the elderly, students are advised to consider gerontology subjects for at least one of their electives.
